One park in China is discovering the hard way, what happens when people don’t respect nature. Here at Qianlingshan Park in the Chinese city of Guiyang, monkey business is becoming serious. The population of macaque monkeys has exploded. Tourists continue to feed them despite warnings not to. Now, the monkeys are biting the hand that feeds. [Chen Guang, Park Administration Secretary]: ”Everyday there is incidents of monkeys hurting people. In some of the worst cases, there are as many as 30 incidents in a day.” Since 2004, there have been 720 cases of these monkeys injuring human beings. This sign cautions visitors to stay at least two meters, or about six feet, away from the monkeys. Most ignore it. Visitors give them sodas, popsicles, even letting them eat out of their hands. There should be only about 150 macaque monkeys in the park. But officials believe there is now twice that many. Effects to control their numbers have been thwarted. [He Minghui, Deputy Director, Qianlingshan Park]: ”Some people tore off the announcement about catching monkeys after it was put up, and smashed our bulletin board.
